The Crux specializes in custom design. If you are interested in custom work here is a method for getting custom work done. ( Well at least our version of it.)
Custom. Many studios use and abuse this custom term in order to leave their clients feeling like they received something more or better than the usual customer. Here at The Crux, we view each client as an opportunity for a fruitful partnership. The fruit being a satisfied customer and artist, for we’re not happy if you’re not. This can prove to be difficult if the client, for example, has not a clue of what they want, yet they still want something “cool”, or is more concerned about when they get it rather than what they get. The list of pitfalls can be endless, so be patient with yourself and the artist. Popularity or lack there of in regards to design should never be considered when making decisions. This is for you and you alone, so don’t be swayed by social opinions, be yourself! The more you’re involved with the design process the happier you'll be in the end. Listen to suggestions the artist might make, a good artist is only interested in making you happy today and twenty years from now.
So here's a breakdown on how to go about getting custom work at The Crux

1. Have a good idea of what you want.

This might require some soul searching, but be patient. If you find images that have a quality that you ‘d like to capture or merely a color you like set it aside so you have some visuals to help you communicate with the artist. Keep in mind that cost quotes can sometimes be hard to give at this point, but we’ll usually offer up an estimation. (more info on this in the FAQ section)

2. Call the studio to schedule a consultation.

This is especially necessary when considering large work. Smaller tattoos can be drawn on the date of the actual tattoo appointment, but that leaves you with little time to make a life long decision. Having the artwork done before the tattoo appointment is always preferable. The Crux can be reached at 616-857-3046

3. Be sure to have a little cash on hand for your consultation.

We don’t charge people to talk about tattoos but we do charge for artwork. Usually this is a minimal amount of ten to fifty dollars depending on the size of the design. Most artists charge about twenty dollars an hour.

4. It is imperative that you have a phone, pager or other method of contact.

When we’re done talking tattoos, we should be able to give you an idea of how long it will take us to have the artwork completed. This time period can fluctuate with the busy season, or with a last minute change of heart. When it is finished we’ll need to be able to contact you so you can stop by to see it. If you have Email this can save you a trip! Also, at this point, we should be able to give you a quote on how much it will cost.

5. Be honest with the artist.

When discussing your tattoo we try to be as honest as possible, so please return the favor. After all we’re working for you. You’re not going to offend us if you don’t like what we’ve drawn for you. Its usually just a matter of changing colors or styles, or maybe you've come to the conclusion that you’re not ready for a tattoo.
